A Memorable First Day with the Kupugani Girls
Today was an exciting start to the girls session at Camp Kupugani! The camp came alive this afternoon as campers arrived. The counselors were stationed at each cabin, ready to assist with luggage unloading and shuttling campers to their new homes for the next two weeks.
Getting to Know Each Other
Everyone gathered around the top field for introductions and name games. This was a fantastic way for campers to break the ice and start feeling comfortable with one another. The core values of Camp Kupugani were introduced along with how these values guide our actions and interactions at camp.
Dinner was a lively affair. Miss Natasha’s spaghetti was a hit! Announcements were made, and the dining hall procedures were explained. Campers learned about sharing, the process for getting seconds, and the importance of managing food waste responsibly.
Evening Fun and Setting the Tone
The evening activities kicked off with an orientation session, followed by large group games. Large group games like Ship Island and Ro Sham Bo Evolution brought out the goofy spirit in everyone.
Campers were introduced to the camp rules and the purpose of Camp Kupugani. The facilitators set the tone for the camp as a place where kids from varied backgrounds can come together, learn from each other, and grow as individuals. The Zulu concept of “Kupugani,” meaning “to raise oneself up,” was emphasized, along with the importance of living, playing, and working together. The evening activities finished with the welcome campfire.
Wrapping Up the Day
As the night drew to a close, campers participated in the Cabin Contract activity, discussing boundaries and comfort levels. They also created their Cabin Flag, which represented their group’s values.
Today was just the beginning of what promises to be an incredible session. Your children are already forming bonds and learning valuable lessons. What adventures will tomorrow bring?
