5 Tips On Dealing With Teenage “Attitude”
Camp Kupugani is our Midwest overnight summer camp that offers two-week sessions for girls-only, boys-only, and blended (intentionally co-ed) campers ages 7-15. At Kupugani, we know that even the best-tempered young person can have their bad days. This isn’t the best, but there’s not much we can do about it… or can we? We found a recent article by Mom Junction discussing how to handle your teen’s (or younger aged child’s) attitude. You can read the full article here or just check out our summary below.
Ignore and Wait
- Show them it does not bother you.
- Is it really that big of a deal?
- Check back in when they have cooled down.
Calmly Handle Misbehavior
- Remind them it will not be tolerated.
- Remind your child of the consequences.
- Sometimes it is not intentional.
-
Change Your Style
- Change up the consequence.
- Find a way to show your child how “good they have it.”
-
Use Humor
- Humor can break the argument cycle.
- Don’t mock or ridicule (that will add fire).
-
Show Appreciation
- Help show your child the behavior you seek by praising when they do it.
- Avoid always pointing out the negative.
- Be precise with your praise.
