6 Tips for Minimizing Sibling Fighting
At Camp Kupugani, our Midwest overnight summer camp, we offer two-week sessions for girls-only, boys-only, and blended (where they work together to develop empowering male-female relationships). Many of our campers have siblings. Being someone with a sibling myself, I remember that our parents sometimes had to manage our sibling arguments. Solving Sibling Fighting
- Calm Yourself First
- Remind yourself that this is not an emergency
- Waiting some time can help everyone
- Get Involved
- Be where the action is
- Don’t yell from the other room (no one likes that)
- Stay Neutral
- Don’t be too quick to place blame
- Offer support and empathy
- Dissect the Problem
- Listen to all sides of the story
- Restate their requests
- Brainstorm Together
- Talk about how to solve the problem
- You may need to start the ball rolling
- It is okay to delay the conversation until they have calmed down
- Offer More Support
- Sometimes one of your children needs more time
- Maybe they need to do something different
