Fun Stats from this Summer at Camp Kupugani: What We Learned
Summer camp is always full of surprises, but this year at Camp Kupugani, we kept track of some quirky fun camp statistics that truly capture the spirit of our community. As intentional parents, you know every little experience can shape your child’s development. Here are 38 (mostly made up) fun stats from our summer that might give you a new perspective on camp life and how it can support your child’s growth. These numbers might surprise you, make you laugh, or even leave you scratching your head.
Learning Through Play
- At Camp Kupugani, we believe in the power of play to teach life skills. We counted 23 spontaneous dance parties–each one filled with laughter and joy. It’s not just fun—these moments help kids learn to express themselves and break down social barriers.
- We also noticed that 71% of campers participated in at least one group activity stretching their comfort zone. Whether it was a team initiative, sport, or a cooperative game, these experiences taught them the value of teamwork and resilience.
Pun-ishment Can Be Fun (See what I did there?)
- 46 different jokes were told during mealtimes. Humor is a powerful tool for connection!
- There were 89 instances of counselors and campers groaning at yet another of Kevin’s puns and/or Dad jokes.
Food for Thought (Yummy!)
- 47% of campers tried a food they’d never had before.
- 89% of those kids said they’d eat it again. That’s what happens when you mix curiosity with a little encouragement.
- 627 marshmallows were roasted (and 120 accidentally burned).
- 287 S’mores were consumed (and 22 got stuck to faces).
- 3 watermelons were devoured in eating contests. Yay, Fourth of July!
- 22 campers poked their Chicken Kiev causing the buttery inside to squirt off of their plates.
- 23 new campers raved about Miss Natasha’s coffee cake and wished they had the recipe.
- 6 campers inadvertently told a family member that they enjoyed Miss Natasha’s camp food more than their home cooking.
Intentional Growth
- As intentional parents, you want to know that your child is not just having fun, but also growing as a person. This summer, we saw 82 campers take on leadership roles, whether by leading a group activity or helping younger campers. These are the moments when kids realize their potential and start to see themselves as capable individuals.
- We also had 123 moments of “teachable conflict–where kids learned to resolve differences with words, not actions. These are essential skills that will serve them well throughout life. At Camp Kupugani, we focus on creating an environment where kids can develop these crucial life skills while having the time of their lives.
Overcoming Challenges
- Camp is where kids can test their boundaries in a safe environment. We had 17 campers conquer their fear of heights on our climbing wall. It’s those small victories that build confidence.
- Speaking of challenges, 95 campers participated in our Untalent show, with 38 performing in front of an audience for the very first time. The joy and pride they felt were contagious!
Nature’s Call
- 56 mosquito bites were scratched.
- 1.5 gallons of bug spray were used in vain to address #17 above.
- 79 fireflies were caught and released.
- 3 frog-jumping contests were held.
- 12 campers had their hands peed on when gently picking up toads.
- 17 wild turkeys were seen.
- 27 deer were standing as if they couldn’t be seen (before running off into the woods)..
Aquatic Adventures
- 3 counselors were dunked at “sink-the-counselor” during Kupu-Olympics.
- 46 campers and parents expressed how good the newly-renovated pool looked.
- 478 cannonballs were performed.
- Kevin was splashed only 1 time when standing outside the pool fence watching an exceptionally vigorous cannonball.
- 223 belly flops happened (ouch!).
- 7 inflatable pool toys were popped (whoops!).
Crafty Creations
- 545 friendship bracelets were made.
- 178 tie-dye apparel items were created.
- 4 counselors were accidentally tie-dyed.
Campfire Chronicles
- Our campfires were another hotspot for bonding. Over 23 heartfelt stories were shared. These moments of connection are where kids learn empathy, kindness, and the importance of community. These lessons carry over into their lives long after the summer ends.
- 94 verses of “The Good Night Song” were sung.
- 9 counselors were caught sneaking extra S’mores.
Fun in the Sun
- We went through 67 tubes of sunscreen this summer. That’s a lot of SPF! It shows how much time the kids spent outside, soaking up sunshine and fresh air.
Friendship by the Numbers
- One of the most beautiful things about camp is the friendships that form. This summer, we saw an average of 3.2 new friendships per camper.
- Some of these friendships crossed borders, with 22% of our campers making friends with someone from a different state or country. That’s the magic of a multicultural camp—kids learn that our differences are what make us stronger together.
