Ways to Talk with Your Kids So They Feel Loved
At Camp Kupugani, our Midwest overnight summer camp that offers girls-only, boys-only, and blended (intentionally co-ed) 2-week sessions, we want each camper to feel loved and appreciated. We recently found an article from Greater Good Magazine with some good tips on how to talk with your kiddos so that they feel loved. Read our take below and check out the full article here.
- “You are loved for who you are and who you will become.”
- Spend dedicated time with your children doing something they choose.
- No multitasking during this time with your children. (If you are struggling with putting your electronics down, read our previous blog on how to battle electronics addiction here).
- “Your feelings help your parents and caregivers know what you need.”
- Our feelings help us to express something we may need.
- Pay attention to what they may be expressing.
- “There are different ways to express your feelings.” (Read our blog about emotional health here.)
- As children grow, so should the way they express themselves.
- Establish “emotion rules” for the family.
- This will take time.
- “Everyone is a learner and making mistakes is part of learning.”
- We (parents) sculpt how and what our children learn.
- Highlight the effort when they try.
- “Your parents and caregivers are trying to be the best parents they can be.”
- Role model talking and being open with your mistakes.
- You aren’t always going to be “the best parent.”
